The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has officially unveiled its squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season, comprising 32 skilled Flying Fijians, including the national co-captain. This announcement follows a fruitful off-season recruitment campaign, bringing five new signings to the team, all of whom are expected to make a significant impact. Notably, three members of the squad are Silver Medallists from the Rugby 7s at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The development squad showcases promising young Fijian talent aiming for future success in the sport. Head Coach Glen Jackson expressed confidence in the balance of the team, noting the retention of key players from the previous year while introducing experienced new members. Among these returning players is Joe Tamani, who previously made a mark with the Drua.
For the first time in its history, the Fijian Drua named co-captains this season: hooker Tevita Ikanivere and halfback Frank Lomani. Ikanivere, a seasoned player with the most appearances for the Drua (38) and a strong presence as co-captain of the national team, sees this leadership role as a significant honor. Lomani, the squad’s most experienced player, is eager to lead alongside Ikanivere as they embark on the team’s fourth season.
The squad has welcomed some noteworthy recruits, including Peni Ravai, a 50-Test capped Flying Fijian from the Queensland Reds, and Inia Tabuavou from Racing 92 in France. The roster also features Vuate Karawalevu, a recent player for the NSW Waratahs, and Ponipate Loganimasi, another Silver Medalist from the Olympics. Joseva Tamani also makes a comeback to the Drua after a stint in France.
The squad emphasizes an all-Flying Fijian approach, with a blend of experienced players and emerging talent. With a distinctive array of players across various positions, the Drua is set for an exciting 2025 season filled with potential.
This announcement isn’t just about the players; it’s a testament to the growth and ambition of Fijian rugby. The efforts to develop homegrown talent while integrating experienced players emphasize a bright future for the Fijian Drua. Fans can look forward to a season that highlights both tradition and innovation in Fijian rugby.
