The Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, has emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation and shared responsibility in safeguarding the Pacific Ocean, which is integral to the region’s identity, culture, and economic vitality. Speaking at the International Conference on Ocean Governance and Blue Economy Development, Minister Bainivalu highlighted that the ocean is not merely a resource but a vital link connecting communities, land, and cultural heritage. She stressed the importance of its protection for the benefit of future generations.
“In the Pacific, we paddle the same canoe. The ocean connects us, sustains us, and defines us. Its protection requires unity, knowledge-sharing, and collective action,” she asserted. The Minister acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various organizations, including the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, Fiji National University, and the South Pacific Island Countries Institute of Asian Studies, which are instrumental in promoting sustainable ocean governance.
Reflecting on Fiji’s long-standing friendship with China, which spans 170 years, Minister Bainivalu noted the shared values of cultural harmony and mutual respect that enhance cooperation in ocean stewardship. Through Fiji–China partnerships, significant advancements are being made in marine conservation, fisheries management, aquaculture development, and coastal compliance.
During the conference, she announced the launch of a two-day Training Course on Marine Resources Utilisation, backed by China’s Island Research Center and the China Ocean Development Foundation, aimed at empowering local communities to effectively manage and protect their marine ecosystems.
Looking forward, the Minister affirmed Fiji’s dedication to enhancing cooperation in various areas, including joint climate and ocean research, marine ecosystem restoration, sustainable aquaculture, digital innovation in fisheries, and integrating traditional knowledge into modern practices. “Let us act as true ocean guardians; listening, learning, and working together to safeguard our shared ocean for generations to come,” she urged.
The conference brought together regional leaders, academics, and development partners, reflecting a common goal for a resilient and sustainable Blue Pacific.
