Fiji Union Pushes for Wage Hike Amid Ongoing Labor Negotiations

The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) is advocating for a wage increase, which has emerged as a focal point among its six main claims in negotiations with Aspen Medical. Union representative Sailesh Naidu articulated this during a hearing at the Arbitration Court with Justice Chaitanya Lakshman on June 4. Naidu indicated that the other five claims — including public holiday pay for overtime, dirt and meal allowances, loyalty payments, and provisions for industrial injury — are straightforward and should be promptly settled.

CETWUF and Aspen Medical had previously reached an agreement in February on 13 claims, but the outstanding issue of wage increases remains contentious. The union is keen to ensure these unresolved matters are incorporated into a master collective agreement following consultations. Aspen Medical’s attorney, Ronal Singh, has requested additional time to review the union’s stance, suggesting that while they aim to resolve simpler issues quickly, the wage matter may necessitate judicial intervention.

Justice Lakshman encouraged both parties to engage in good faith discussions, highlighting the national issue of brain-drain and the importance of fair compensation to retain skilled workers in Fiji. He noted that an amicable resolution is crucial and should not be delayed any longer, with the court set to reconvene on this matter on July 2.

This situation reflects ongoing tensions related to labor relations in Fiji’s healthcare sector and emphasizes the need for constructive dialogue. Previous articles have pointed out that issues of compensation and working conditions have historically led to similar disputes between CETWUF and Aspen Medical. The proactive stance of the union in seeking resolutions stands as a hopeful sign for meaningful progress in labor rights and employee relations.

By continually pushing for fair treatment and outcomes, there is a potential for positive change that could improve not only conditions for these workers but also the overall healthcare system in Fiji.
