Fijian Chiefs Demand Constitutional Change: A Call to Action

Chiefs from Ra province marched through Rakiraki town today, expressing their call for the dissolution of the 2013 Constitution. The event, which was approved by both the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Roads Authority, stemmed from a resolution made during their recent Bose Vanua assembly.

Leading the march was Ratu Emori Bolobolo, head of the Vanua. In a significant gesture, the chiefs delivered a letter addressed to the Prime Minister at the office of the Provincial Administrator. The peaceful demonstration was marked by a heavy police presence, with additional officers deployed to ensure security throughout the event. Fortunately, the march concluded without any incidents.

This latest call for constitutional change resonates with a broader movement among Fijian leaders advocating for reforms. Previous discussions led by the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) have underscored the need to address issues within the 2013 Constitution to better reflect the rights and needs of the iTaukei community. Notably, Assistant Minister for Justice, Ratu Josaia Niudamu, has highlighted the urgency of revisiting constitutional adequacies, indicating a growing consensus in Fijian leadership about the necessity of reform.

The chiefs’ united stance signifies a collective effort to enhance participatory governance and ensure that the constitutional framework is more inclusive of Fiji’s diverse populations. Their determination showcases a hopeful trajectory towards dialogue and reform that respects the voices of all citizens, paving the way for a more democratic future.

In essence, the ongoing discussions around constitutional reform signify a proactive and hopeful approach towards achieving a governance system that acknowledges and values the contributions and perspectives of all Fijians.
