The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of contributing to the growth of Fiji’s tourism industry. During a ceremony held on Friday, FHTA CEO Fantasha Lockington reflected on the association’s evolution from a small group of dedicated hoteliers in 1965 to a recognized advocate for tourism operators and communities across the region.
Lockington emphasized the organization’s perseverance through challenges including political changes and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted that the association has become a critical voice in the industry, often consulted by the government on matters affecting tourism. The FHTA’s commitment to advocating for sustainable growth and inclusivity was highlighted as crucial to navigating the future.
Narend Kumar, President of FHTA and General Manager of Tanoa Hotel Group, added that the industry, while relatively young, has faced numerous challenges and emerged stronger, fueled by the collective efforts of its members. The event also included the annual general meeting, where five new members were elected to the FHTA board of directors, further strengthening the association’s leadership.
The 60th anniversary not only reflects on past achievements but also serves as a platform to refocus on the future, encouraging innovation and resilience in the tourism sector. This optimistic outlook is built upon the industry’s continued growth and the recognition of its vital role in Fiji’s economy, fostering hope for a prosperous and sustainable future in tourism.
Additionally, this celebration resonates with broader themes tracking the tourism sector’s adaptation and transformation, particularly amid challenges like the pandemic. With momentum indicating an evolved commitment to collaboration and sustainability, the outlook for the tourism industry in Fiji appears welcoming and progressive, promising opportunities for growth and community empowerment.
