In a significant step towards enhancing support for older Fijians, the National Council for Older Persons, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, has initiated a review of the National Ageing Policy after a decade. This policy review aims to address the diverse challenges faced by the elderly, extending beyond issues of abuse to encompass health care, access to age-friendly services, and mental health support.

Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, emphasized the importance of this policy in light of the increasing needs of the ageing population. “Having a national ageing policy will ensure that as a nation, we are paying attention to the demographics and growing needs of our ageing population and have a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach to ensuring care, inclusion, and active participation of our older persons in our society,” she stated.

Independent member of the National Council for Older Persons, Cema Bolabola, echoed the sentiment, stressing that the policy must prioritize inclusivity and quality. She underlined the necessity of looking at the policy broadly to guarantee that government programs as well as family and community activities are both inclusive and of high quality.

The review process will kick off with Phase 1 of consultations, running from now until February 27. Following this initial phase, nationwide consultations are scheduled to commence in March, spanning all four divisions and covering 15 districts across Fiji. This extensive engagement is expected to gather valuable insights and perspectives from the community, ultimately leading to a more robust and effective National Ageing Policy.

The renewed focus on supporting older persons signifies a compassionate and progressive approach by the Fijian government, promising a more inclusive future for its ageing citizens.
