In a vital move to enhance disaster preparedness, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative specifically targets students from years 9 to 13 and their families, aiming to foster a culture of readiness as Fiji approaches its cyclone season, which typically runs from November to April.

Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, Inoke Raikoso, addressed the challenges in promoting a culture of preparedness, noting that many communities still face vulnerabilities and school infrastructures often date back to the 1800s. These factors complicate the efforts to effectively instill disaster preparedness among youth.

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua, emphasized the significance of this distribution event, highlighting that the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials signifies a partnership dedicated to enhancing community awareness and preparedness. He stated, “These materials serve not just as information tools, but daily reminders of the steps we can all take towards being better prepared for natural disasters.”

Over the past year, more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students benefited from similar disaster awareness campaigns, and an additional 50,000 families are expected to receive materials this year. This extensive outreach reflects a strong commitment to building resilience within communities, particularly in light of increasing challenges posed by climate change.

This initiative aligns with recent calls from government officials, including Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, advocating for household readiness and highlighting the importance of youth involvement in disaster risk management. By empowering young people and integrating preparedness practices into their daily lives, Fiji is making important strides towards safeguarding its citizens.
