As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, Commissioner Barbara Malimali of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to its mandate under the law. She emphasized that their ongoing efforts aim to protect Fijians from corruption by focusing on investigation, prosecution, and importantly, public education.

Malimali highlighted the detrimental impact of corruption, comparing it to a parasite that erodes democratic institutions and diminishes public trust in governance. She underscored FICAC’s crucial role in promoting good governance principles, transparency, and accountability, which are in harmony with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In her address, Malimali urged the public and stakeholders to join FICAC’s campaign against corruption. “We plead with the people and our stakeholders to work with us and report any corruption-related activity to FICAC,” she stated.

This year’s International Anti-Corruption Day theme, “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” serves as a rallying call for collective action against corruption.

In a world where governance and integrity are increasingly important, Fiji’s proactive stance on combating corruption reflects positively on its efforts to foster a just and equitable society. Engaging the public to participate in the fight against corruption not only strengthens community ties but also promotes a culture of accountability and trust.
