The Fijian Cabinet has recently approved a plan for the procurement of family planning commodities through the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) Third-Party Procurement Mechanism. This decision marks a significant step in enhancing Fiji’s reproductive health security.

Since 1997, UNFPA has played a crucial role in addressing Fiji’s reproductive health needs through donor-funded initiatives. However, as the support from donors has seen a decline, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has taken a proactive approach by opting for direct procurement of essential supplies via the UNFPA’s procurement mechanism.

This strategic decision is set to ensure the continuity and reliability of family planning services across the nation, underpinning long-term sustainability. The government emphasizes that this move is essential for protecting reproductive health outcomes and ensuring that communities throughout Fiji have uninterrupted access to contraceptives. By taking charge of its reproductive health needs, Fiji aims to uphold the health and well-being of its population, fostering a positive future for families and communities alike.
