The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), is intensifying its awareness campaigns regarding the Fall Armyworm (FAW), urging farmers across Fiji to remain vigilant. Recent infestations have been notably reported in the Western Division, particularly between Sigatoka and Rakiraki, highlighting the urgency for effective pest management.

To combat the spread of this invasive pest, officials are implementing enhanced field surveillance and early detection methods. These strategies aim not only to control existing outbreaks but also to prevent new infestations. Farmers are encouraged to regularly inspect their crops for signs of FAW and to report any suspected cases directly to BAF via their helpline at 5995.

Additionally, farmers need to secure authorization from BAF before transporting maize and sweetcorn from affected areas to prevent further dissemination of the pest. Containment and control measures are already in effect on farms that have been identified as infested.

This proactive approach mirrors previous efforts by BAF to address similar agricultural threats, underscoring the critical importance of community cooperation and rapid response in safeguarding Fiji’s agricultural landscape. The enduring commitment to fighting the Fall Armyworm through public education and collaboration fosters a sense of hope among local farmers, emphasizing the resilience of Fiji’s agriculture.

The situation exemplifies the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in maintaining food security and protecting livelihoods in the face of challenges posed by agricultural pests. As the Ministry and BAF work together to bolster their strategies, the collective efforts of the community can lead to a more robust defense against such threats, ensuring the sustainability of Fiji’s agricultural sector.
