Tropical Depression TD09F is currently located approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Udu Point, Fiji, and is projected to move southward towards the islands while gradually intensifying. By later today, it is expected to enter Fiji’s waters north of Vanua Levu and may evolve into a Category 1 tropical cyclone by this evening.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a gale warning for the eastern regions of Vanua Levu, including eastern Macuata, eastern Cakaudrove, Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Taveuni, and the Northern Lau group. This warning has been extended to encompass the remainder of the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

A strong wind warning also remains in effect for northeastern areas of Viti Levu, specifically from Tailevu North through Ra-Rakiraki to Tavua, and includes the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands. A significant heavy rain warning is active for the Northern Division as well as Lau and Lomaiviti groups, with alerts for heavy rainfall across the rest of Fiji.

As TD09F intensifies, wind speeds could reach up to 50 km/h, with gusts possibly exceeding 65 km/h, contributing to rough sea conditions. The expected heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding, particularly in areas already affected by previous weather patterns.

This situation draws parallels to past disturbances such as TD01F, which similarly impacted Fiji with strong winds and heavy rain. It is essential for residents to stay informed and prepared as communities come together to confront potential challenges posed by this developing weather system.

While these conditions can lead to hardships, they also offer a chance for communities to rally and support one another, underscoring resilience in the face of adversity. Community preparedness and cooperation will play vital roles in mitigating risks associated with TD09F.
