The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating closely with the government of Vanuatu to assess the situation of Fijians who may have been impacted by the significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Vanuatu yesterday. Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that while he could not confirm any severe injuries among Fijians, Fiji is prepared to extend aid to Vanuatu.

“We are ready, as our personnel are undergoing training at Blackrock,” Mr. Rabuka remarked, indicating that they can be quickly deployed with the disaster management team from regional development.

Echoing this commitment, Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua stated that Fiji is closely monitoring the effects of the earthquake and stands prepared to support the relief efforts alongside its partners.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred 30 kilometres west of Vanuatu’s capital at a depth of approximately 57.1 kilometres shortly after noon. An aftershock measuring 5.5 followed shortly after. Preliminary reports from Vanuatu authorities indicate that one casualty was confirmed as of yesterday.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, telecommunications in Vanuatu have faced disruptions. However, the use of Starlink technology has enabled communication through emails, photos, and videos, providing crucial updates that are now prevalent on social media platforms.

This proactive response by the Fijian government highlights not only their readiness to assist but also strengthens regional solidarity in times of crisis. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and support among neighboring nations during humanitarian challenges.

In summary, the Fijian government is taking necessary steps to assist Vanuatu following a significant earthquake, demonstrating readiness and solidarity in crisis response efforts.
