The Republic of Fiji Navy is playing a crucial role in combating drug trafficking as it provides vital intelligence, surveillance, and maritime support to law enforcement during significant operations. Commander Timoci Natuva highlighted the Navy’s involvement in a recent drug bust, emphasizing their efforts in monitoring vessel movements and relaying essential information from Fijian waters.

Natuva clarified that while the Navy is focused on operations at sea, the responsibility for direct interdiction on land lies with the Police. “If we have that information and we have that analysis, we hand it over to them,” he stated. In this instance, the Police had requested information regarding vessel activity in a specific area, leading the Navy to deploy a patrol boat to locate the suspected narcotics vessel.

In addition, the Commander revealed that ships were deployed between September and October last year to keep an eye on suspicious maritime activities. “The ocean is quite vast, so we do what we can within the powers we have and legislate,” he mentioned. The Navy remains committed to being ready for such operations, always prepared to assist law enforcement where possible.

Natuva emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between various agencies to effectively address the challenges posed by drug trafficking in Fiji’s maritime zones. This partnership not only strengthens efforts to secure the nation’s waters but also underscores a united front against narcotics threats. The continued vigilance and cooperation among these agencies signal a hopeful outlook for maintaining maritime security in the region.
