Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, has emphasized the pressing need to address the complex challenges facing young people today, particularly those related to sexual reproductive health. During her address at the Naitasiri Tertiary Students Association awareness event in Nadi, she highlighted that these issues are often left undiscussed despite being critical to the well-being of the youth.

Kiran’s remarks underscored the importance of acknowledging mental health struggles, peer pressure, and substance abuse, including the increasing concern regarding HIV and STIs. She urged students and peer leaders to take an active role in addressing these issues, as they are vital allies in promoting awareness and change.

She noted the government’s ongoing efforts, in collaboration with various ministries and partners, to expand outreach, health services, and counseling support. However, Kiran called for a more open discussion about sexual health, noting its foundational impact on young people’s lives.

Reflecting on cultural identity, Ms. Kiran encouraged young people from rural backgrounds to recognize and embrace their heritage, suggesting that this can help mitigate the need to conform to societal pressures. She proposed that student associations could foster environments where cultural identity and peer support go hand-in-hand, creating forums for sharing and resilience-building.

In light of increasing online violence, the Minister stressed the necessity of educating youths on safe internet practices and the importance of authenticity. Her call to action involved communities working together, fostering peer support networks, and promoting a positive self-image amongst young people, aiming to harness the inherent strengths found in unity and cultural roots.

Overall, Kiran’s proactive stance reflects a hopeful trajectory for addressing these challenges, with a focus on empowering youth to lead healthier, more informed lives. Her advocacy for dialogue and collaboration aligns with broader initiatives addressing societal issues. Through these combined efforts, there is potential for meaningful change that protects and supports the future generation.
