Weather Whirlwind
Brought to you by the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi
At precisely 5:30am, on this first day of January 2026
Attention, everyone! It’s raining cats and dogs up north, and they’re not even the same species! A HEAVY RAIN ALERT is waving at you for Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti Group, Kadavu and their smaller offshore buddies, and pretty much anyone cozying up in the Eastern and Interior parts of Viti Levu. So if your plans include outdoor activities, you might want to consider trading in your umbrella for a life raft!
Situation update: There’s an active trough of low pressure making itself comfy over Fiji’s northern and eastern realms, dragging along clouds and rain on its little holiday. Expect this moody celebrity to drift east and keep the party going until later today.
Forecast until midnight tonight for the Fiji group: We’re looking at sporadic rain and maybe a few dramatic thunderstorms trying to steal the spotlight in the Northern Division, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, and parts of Viti Levu. Think of it as nature’s version of a soap opera. Rain should ease to more civilized showers as the hours roll by.
Heads up: those persistent heavy showers could pull a fast one and cause flash flooding in low-lying or flood-prone areas. So, if you see any fish swimming past your front door, don’t panic, just blame the weather!
Elsewhere, some cloud cover is joining in the fun with scattered showers and possibly more thunderstorms looking to join the cast, before finally retreating later. The winds are alert, blowing moderately to freshly from the south to the north, and the seas are feeling a bit rough, so don’t forget your sea legs!
Looking ahead to Friday: Expect an encore performance of occasional showers, heavy at times, with isolated thunderstorms over the Northern Division, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti. Meanwhile, on the eastern side of Viti Levu—like Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Naitasiri-Tailevu-Ra-Rakiraki—you’ll find a mix of clouds, showers, and thunderstorms—but don’t worry too much, things will mostly be fine elsewhere with just a whisper of afternoon or evening showers.

For Rotuma: Hold onto your hats! The HEAVY RAIN ALERT is in full swing here. Expect occasional heavy rain and the odd dramatic thunderstorm. Gusty winds are also part of the fun. Min: 25, Max: 30.
