A significant weather event is on the horizon for Fiji as Tropical Disturbance 09F is expected to move southward and strengthen, potentially becoming a tropical depression as it reaches Fiji waters late Sunday. The Nadi weather office has issued warnings regarding the strong winds and heavy rains associated with this developing system.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Services, strong to near gale-force winds will affect various regions of the country, especially starting tomorrow. A warning has already been placed for the Northern Division and northeastern areas of Viti Levu, notably from Tailevu North to Rakiraki, as well as the Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu.
A heavy rain alert has also been issued for the entire Northern Division and the Yasawa Group. Other regions, including the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and portions of eastern Viti Levu, should also prepare for significant rainfall and thunderstorms. Winds may reach speeds of 50 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h.
This situation reflects past disturbances, such as TD01F, underscoring the critical need for community preparedness and awareness when severe weather strikes. While the impending conditions may present challenges, there is a spirit of hope that through community solidarity and proactive measures, residents can navigate these weather events together.
As locals begin preparations, they are advised to stay updated with local weather reports, reinforce their emergency plans, and support each other in anticipation of these potential challenges.
