Fiji Faces Alarming Senior Suicide Rates: A Call for Community Action

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has confirmed that the alarming rates of suicide in Fiji are notably high among senior citizens. This serious situation has prompted Kiran to reach out to community and religious leaders, urging them to prioritize the well-being of both elderly individuals and children to ensure they are properly supported.

Earlier this year, Kiran revealed during various engagements that there are growing concerns regarding elderly neglect, highlighting troubling statistics with 16 reported suicides among seniors from January to June. Moreover, from January to August, 19 elderly individuals have taken their lives, a rise from the previous year where 60 suicide attempts were recorded in the same timeframe. Many elderly citizens are reportedly feeling abandoned, as the younger generations often relocate abroad, leaving their elders isolated and without necessary support.

Kiran emphasized the role of families and communities in providing care, asserting that neglecting the elderly threatens the very foundation of families and can lead to broader societal issues. “When we stop caring for our older persons, we risk losing the unity that keeps families strong,” she stated.

With 112 abandoned seniors residing in government-operated care homes across Labasa, Suva, and Lautoka, and with 86 percent of these individuals living with some form of disability, the need for a comprehensive support system is more critical than ever. Kiran has consistently called for inclusive community efforts to engage with the elderly, encouraging everyone to reach out to those who seem lonely.

Overall, the community is urged to recognize the invaluable experience that seniors possess and to engage them positively, which could lead to not only improved mental health outcomes for these individuals but also a strengthened sense of community cohesion. As Fiji seeks to create a culture that values and respects its older members, there is hope for a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, regardless of age.
