In a troubling announcement, Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, revealed that the country has seen an alarming rise in suicide rates among the elderly over the past three years. This marks Kiran’s first address to parliament since her appointment, where she expressed her deep concerns about the severe neglect and isolation that many seniors face, particularly as families migrate overseas in search of better opportunities.

Kiran underscored that many elderly individuals, who are often coping with disabilities from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), lack sufficient support systems. “Many have been neglected as their families have moved on to greener pastures,” she stated, highlighting the emotional and mental struggles faced by older citizens.

To address these critical issues, Kiran announced a review of the national aging policy and the launch of various initiatives designed to support the elderly. One key proposal includes the establishment of dedicated community spaces across districts, aimed at providing seniors with access to necessary services such as counseling and social interactions during urban visits.

Additionally, Kiran urged faith-based organizations to organize regular events and activities for senior citizens, which are vital in enhancing the emotional and mental well-being of this group. Currently, 112 seniors reside in government-operated homes, with 86 percent of them living with some form of disability, underscoring the urgent need for community engagement and support.

The collective efforts of families, community leaders, and government agencies are essential in ensuring that elderly individuals receive the respect and care they deserve. By promoting social connections and supportive environments, there exists a hopeful potential to not only reduce the rates of elder suicide but to significantly improve the quality of life for seniors throughout Fiji. These steps demonstrate a strong commitment to creating a compassionate society that truly values its older population.
