The fourth accused in a significant drug trafficking case in Fiji, Ratu Aporosa Davelevu, has denied any knowledge of assisting in transporting over four tonnes of methamphetamine. During his testimony at the Lautoka High Court, he claimed he was simply hired to drive a truck and was unaware of the illicit cargo he was handling. Davelevu stated he was approached by co-accused Justin Ho at SubZero Barbershop in Denarau in December 2023 and received a payment of $200 for his services as a driver.

Davelevu’s past includes deportation from Australia in 2017 due to repeated traffic offenses, and prior to his arrest, he worked as a forklift driver. The prosecution, led by John Rabuku, challenged his account, questioning why he traveled to Denarau for a haircut and accusing him of remaining silent during crucial parts of his police interview.

This case is part of Fiji’s judicial efforts to combat drug trafficking, with earlier testimonies revealing the operation’s organized nature. The judiciary’s commitment to accountability and safety in the community is underscored by the testimony of multiple witnesses who have bravely come forward, reflecting a community united against the drug crisis.

The ongoing trial highlights the collaborative efforts within the judiciary to dismantle drug trafficking networks, contributing to a safer Fiji. Each witness’s contribution reinforces hope for a just resolution and improved public safety.

As the trial progresses, the potential for positive changes in the community grows, emphasizing the importance of law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to tackle drug-related offenses and protect the public.
