The Suva Magistrates Court is set to make a decision tomorrow regarding a request from former journalist Charlie Charters to modify his bail conditions, allowing him to travel to Australia for work. This hearing took place this morning before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne.

Charters’ defense lawyer, Seforan Fatiaki, assured the court that his client would return to Fiji by March 30 to face his criminal charges. As part of the bail application, Mr. Charters has provided two sureties—namely his brother and a family friend—as well as a cash bail amounting to $2,500. Additionally, he has submitted a letter from his employer, indicating that his skills are needed in Australia, where he serves as the head of sales for the company.

However, the prosecution, represented by FIAC prosecutor Rusiate Doidoi, raised significant concerns, arguing that there is a substantial risk that Mr. Charters might not return to Fiji if granted permission to travel. The court is expected to deliver its ruling on this matter at 10:30 AM tomorrow.

This case highlights the balance between professional commitments and legal responsibilities, and the court’s ruling will be keenly awaited by all parties involved.
