The Acting Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service has reiterated the importance of political neutrality among civil servants in a recent circular, urging all government employees to adhere to this principle in light of the upcoming general election. Pita Tagicakirewa’s message, dated October 24, emphasizes that the Civil Service operates in an apolitical manner, stressing that civil servants must perform their duties with professionalism and impartiality.
Tagicakirewa referenced the Civil Service Act 1999 to remind employees of their responsibilities under the Civil Service Values and Code of Conduct. He explicitly instructed civil servants to refrain from engaging in political activities or making unofficial statements regarding administrative matters. The circular serves as a cautionary note, warning that any violations of these guidelines could be classified as misconduct, subjecting offenders to disciplinary action as outlined in existing procedures.
Furthermore, Tagicakirewa called on all ministries to ensure that their staff is well-informed about the circular’s contents and that any breaches are dealt with according to established discipline guidelines. Notably, this directive supersedes any previous guidance concerning political activities within the Civil Service.
