The Fiji National Rugby League is taking proactive measures to ensure a strong performance in the upcoming Pacific Championship later this year. Starting next month, the team will reach out to Fijian players currently competing in Australia, assessing their availability for the Fiji Bati.
Chairman Akuila Masi emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, noting lessons learned from past experiences. “Last year, we prepared for just one week, which affected our game against Papua New Guinea. We need to engage with these players and their clubs,” he remarked. Masi mentioned that the team has already identified a list of potential players in various Australian leagues, including the NRL, NSW Cup, and Queensland Cup, as well as promoting local talent.
This year’s Pacific Championship is particularly significant, as it will occur in Papua New Guinea from mid-October to mid-November, with specific dates to be announced soon. The Fiji Bati aims to harness the commitment of both local and international players to provide an exciting showcase of rugby league talent.
Previous articles highlighted that Fiji will host matches for the first time in over 20 years, with the Fiji Bati expected to face off against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls and the Cook Islands. Coach Wise Kativerata has also expressed anticipation for this event, pledging to balance seasoned players and new talents to strengthen the squad.
As preparations ramp up, support from the Fijian community is crucial, and fans are encouraged to rally behind the team as they strive for success in the championship. With excitement building, this event presents an incredible opportunity for Fiji to showcase its rugby prowess on home turf, making it a memorable chapter in the nation’s sports history.
