Fiji is poised to enhance its correctional system with the establishment of a dedicated rehabilitation center for drug offenders, addressing ongoing challenges within the prison population. Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Auta Moceisuva, emphasized the absence of external rehabilitation facilities or specialized treatment centers within existing prison compounds, highlighting a growing concern over drug-related offenses.

Currently, the majority of inmates are concentrated in facilities located in Lautoka, Suva, and Nakasi, which exacerbates the need for targeted rehabilitation services. Mr. Moceisuva indicated that Cabinet has approved the construction of a new drug rehabilitation center specifically for use by the Fiji Corrections Service. This initiative has been accounted for in the government’s multi-year budget cycle, signaling a commitment to improving inmates’ rehabilitation prospects.

The plan shows a positive step forward, as Mr. Moceisuva noted the importance of securing partnerships with potential donors to support the program. With a rising number of drug offenders in the prison system, the establishment of a dedicated facility is seen as critical to preventing further deterioration of the situation.

Despite the optimism surrounding the project, Mr. Moceisuva expressed concerns about the uncertainty of agency support for the construction of the center. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, conveying that the corrections service is actively working to establish this vital facility to accommodate the needs of drug offenders.

The approval for this rehabilitation center represents a hopeful development in Fiji’s efforts to address the increasing challenges faced within its prison system and to provide crucial support for rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.
