Fiji Men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasizes that competition is vital within the national squad as new and returning players vie for positions ahead of forthcoming tournaments. With fresh talent entering the camp and some familiar faces absent from training sessions, Kolinisau stresses that selection is strictly based on performance and attitude.
The Olympic gold medalist promotes a “best on best” philosophy in training, encouraging each player to demonstrate their unique contributions to the team. He stated, “In the squad, I told the boys, here it’s best on best. Make sure you bring your point of difference when you come here. We want to see if they’ve got what it takes and if they understand the way we want to play.”
Among the newcomers, Wame Ratuva and Tomasi Stark have recently joined the camp after showcasing their skills at the Coral Coast 7s. Kolinisau noted that they impressed with their performances, which earned them the chance to compete against established team members in training.
While several regulars are currently absent, Kolinisau reassured fans that this does not mean they are out of contention for the squad. For instance, Joseva Talacolo is undergoing a stand-down period following a concussion, and Viwa Naduvalo is taking a brief break before rejoining training.
With a focus on enhancing internal standards, Kolinisau aims to build a team that not only understands their system but can also perform under pressure on the world stage. The squad is gearing up for the Vancouver 7s, scheduled to take place from the 7th to the 8th of next month, highlighting their commitment to excellence in international competition.
