Festive Season Drug Crackdown: Police Intensify Operations

Police are ramping up efforts to combat illegal drug activities as the festive season approaches. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has issued a firm message, stating, “we are targeting anyone suspected of drugs.” The police will focus on checking known drug hotspots, along with scrutinizing vehicles and vessels that raise suspicion during this busy time of year.

ACP Driu reported that drug arrests are occurring daily, with operations intensifying to tackle the rampant illicit drug trade especially during the holiday season. He emphasizes the importance of public support in the ongoing battle against drugs.

Last night, a recent arrest took place at the Nadonumai roundabout in Lami, near Suva, when police conducted a routine check on a vehicle. The driver allegedly threatened an officer, which led to a deeper investigation. With the help of the K-9 Unit, police discovered a clear plastic wrapper containing five dried branches and leaves believed to be marijuana. A subsequent search of the suspect’s home uncovered a zip-lock bag containing additional dried leaves, also suspected to be marijuana. The suspect is now in custody at Lami Police Station, awaiting further investigation.

ACP Driu reiterated that this operation is just one of many in the police force’s steadfast commitment to reducing drug-related crimes during the festive season.

This proactive approach by law enforcement highlights the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking and possession, especially as communities gather to celebrate. The involvement of the public in supporting these initiatives can pave the way for safer environments during the holidays and beyond.

In summary, law enforcement is making significant strides in the fight against illegal drugs, demonstrating a strong commitment to community safety during the festive period.
