A suspension has been placed on all ferris wheel operations until further notice to prioritize public safety. Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace, Agni Deo Singh, announced this decision after extensive consultations with senior officials in his ministry.
The move comes in the wake of a concerning incident that occurred in Taveuni during the Wairiki Sevens on Wednesday, when a ferris wheel experienced mechanical failure while patrons were aboard. Minister Singh indicated that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit has already inspected the ride.
Reports, amplified by a video shared on social media, depicted smoke billowing from the ferris wheel’s engine, prompting bystanders to intervene and assist passengers in safely exiting the ride. Fortunately, all riders disembarked without injury.
In light of this situation, Minister Singh has initiated an investigation into the event and dispatched the OHS team to further examine the issue. He mentioned that a preliminary report would shed light on the malfunction’s cause. There is growing concern that many amusement rides, especially those operated by lower-budget vendors, may be outdated and not adequately maintained, which could pose dangers to riders.
This proactive decision by the government aims to enhance safety protocols and underscore the importance of regular inspections for amusement rides.
