Waqasaqa Votuwale is filled with pride as he celebrates the remarkable achievement of his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, who has been honored as the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old secured this prestigious title during Wednesday’s prizegiving ceremony, achieving an impressive score of 405 out of 500 in her Year 13 annual examinations.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village in Taveuni, shared the sacrifices he and his wife made to prioritize their children’s education. The couple made the tough decision to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, leaving behind their life in the village to provide their children with better educational opportunities.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale expressed. “As the sole provider, I had to prioritize my children’s needs. My wife and I didn’t finish secondary school due to financial difficulties, but I didn’t want that to hinder my children’s future.”
The proud father of six emphasized that Maraia’s achievement came as no surprise due to her unwavering commitment. Previously, she was also recognized as the dux during her Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. Aiming for a career in accounting, Maraia expressed deep gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, stating, “As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, which motivated me to pursue the dux award. I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I promise to make them proud.”
