Calls are intensifying in Vanuabalavu, Lau, for the government to address crucial infrastructure needs such as rural road improvements and the provision of farming tools to support local agricultural development. Villagers believe that these unmet needs are hindering their economic progress. Many families are collaborating with overseas relatives to revitalize unused land for large-scale farming of root crops and vegetables. However, they face significant challenges due to poor road access and a lack of necessary machinery.
Temo Kotoiyacata, a mother of three, shared how her family earned over $3,000 from their initial harvest last year despite starting their farming journey only that year. She emphasized the ongoing potential for generating income, affirming that a shift in government support, particularly in providing adequate tools and machinery, could significantly enhance productivity.
“Many income-generating activities are taking place in the islands and rural areas across Fiji. Increased support would empower villagers to maximize these opportunities,” Kotoiyacata stated. She underscored the need for heavy machinery to manage land clearing effectively, as manual labor proves to be insufficient. Furthermore, better road access is essential for transporting produce and attracting younger generations to engage in farming.
Tomi Finau, chair of the Vanuabalavu Day Committee, echoed these concerns, calling for improved community engagement and government services directly on the islands rather than requiring residents to travel to Suva. Finau proposed the organization of government expos on the islands to connect agencies with local communities more effectively.
Leba Verewale, a local entrepreneur, highlighted the invaluable skills of women on the islands, noting that skill training could unlock further business opportunities, such as in jewelry making. She stressed that government support is crucial in establishing markets to showcase these talents and products.
With the national budget allocation expected to be announced soon, residents of Vanuabalavu are hopeful that their calls for better infrastructure, market access, and substantial agricultural investment will be prioritized. This collective effort reflects a resilient community ready to harness its agricultural potential for future growth and economic self-sufficiency.
