Authorities in Sigatoka have discovered explosive materials, including a stick of dynamite and blast cables, on a local farm, prompting an investigation by both the police and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). The dangerous items were found by a farmer in Nadeva Valley, specifically inside a water tank located approximately 200 meters from his residence.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the discovery and stated that the area surrounding the find has been cordoned off while investigations are ongoing. This incident comes amid heightened concerns about illegal explosives trafficking in Fiji, highlighted by the recent nationwide operation dubbed “Operation Expo,” aimed at dismantling suspected explosive smuggling operations.
Just days prior, police initiated a crackdown on illegal explosives, conducting raids and establishing roadblocks in key locations like Sawani, Suva, and Lami. This initiative followed reports of miners from the Vatukoula Gold Mine being dismissed for smuggling activities, including the unauthorized removal of detonators and other mining equipment.
The police have encouraged community cooperation, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities related to explosives. Authorities emphasize the importance of collective efforts to ensure public safety and to combat illegal activities effectively.
This proactive approach by law enforcement represents a commitment to safeguard the community from potential hazards posed by illicit explosives, fostering a culture of vigilance and collaboration. The discovery in Sigatoka further underscores the urgent need for community awareness and active participation in safety measures.
