Israel launched airstrikes on a hospital in Gaza early on Tuesday, following a brief pause in military operations for the release of Israeli-American Edan Alexander by Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck the Nasser medical complex in southern Gaza, targeting the surgical ward and resulting in the deaths of two patients, as well as injuries to medical staff, according to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).

The attack occurred approximately an hour after Alexander was freed and was preceded by strikes in the Al Daraj neighborhood of northern Gaza. The IDF’s stated target was Hassan Eslaiah, a well-known Gaza photojournalist accused by Israel of being involved with terrorist activities, who was receiving treatment for injuries from a prior airstrike.

This recent escalation aligns with ongoing and intensified military operations in the region. In previous reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined objectives for a more extended military presence in Gaza, moving away from short-term raids to possibly undertaking long-term operations. This shift has raised alarms regarding worsening humanitarian conditions and has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating that over 50,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict escalated.

Further complicating the situation, Israeli authorities have recently surrounded two additional hospitals in Gaza, demanding immediate evacuations, a move that has faced condemnation from both Palestinian authorities and international humanitarian organizations due to the threat it poses to patient safety and healthcare access.

As the violence continues to escalate, the international community is closely watching the developments, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid. There is a glimmer of hope that sustained negotiations and international engagement might lead to alleviating the crisis and improving conditions for those caught in the conflict.
