As the global community celebrates International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on Laleena Kumar, a trailblazing entrepreneur from Tavua who has successfully transitioned from a family-oriented life to becoming the Director of a thriving family business. Her journey is a testament to resilience, commitment, and a passion for empowering women in the entrepreneurial landscape.

Laleena Kumar began her professional journey after dedicating three pivotal years to her family, where she balanced the roles of a devoted mother to four children and an essential support for her husband, Raven Kumar, in their business, Custombilt Sheetmetal Co. Pte. Ltd in Walu Bay. Her evolution into a business leader showcases her relentless pursuit of growth and development.

Her educational journey started in Fiji with primary studies at Toko Bhartiya, secondary education at Tavua College, and computing classes at NZPTC in Suva. After welcoming her third child, Laleena recognized an opportunity to actively participate in running the metalwork business alongside her husband. By 2012, her role expanded significantly as she took on the responsibilities of a shareholder and director, overseeing the company’s internal and legal affairs.

Motivated by her experience and knowledge, Mrs. Kumar launched her own hardware enterprise, Dispatch and Delivery Pte Ltd, marking her as the first woman to run a hardware business in Fiji. Recently, she further broadened her entrepreneurial horizon with the establishment of Family Choice Supermarket & Café, which opened its doors in Walu Bay under the auspices of Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica.

In reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Mrs. Kumar emphasizes the significance of mutual support in achieving collective success. “Success in business or any field isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about lifting others and sharing your experience with those around you,” she articulates. This message resonates profoundly on International Women’s Day, as she advocates for the strength and capabilities of women who diligently contribute to Fiji’s development.

Laleena’s inspiring story parallels that of other female entrepreneurs in Fiji, such as Loraini Bula, who has adeptly balanced family responsibilities while nurturing her own business, Loraini’s Creations. Both women exemplify how perseverance and community support can foster both personal and professional growth.

These stories serve as powerful motivators for women throughout Fiji, urging them to embrace entrepreneurial ventures and convert challenges into opportunities. As they forge ahead, they illuminate the pathway for future generations, fostering a supportive and nurturing community.
