In honor of International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable journey of Irinieta Naqolo, an inspiring Assistant Manager at the Sheraton Fiji Resort & Spa on Tokoriki Island. Ms. Naqolo embarked on her career in tourism and hospitality in 2014, beginning her role as a waitress at the same resort where she currently excels. Her ambition and determination to rise in this field stem from a profound eagerness to learn and grow professionally.
Born into a family that prioritizes hard work and education, Ms. Naqolo experienced initial hesitation from her parents regarding her aspirations in hospitality. However, with her mother’s steadfast support, she pursued her dreams. “It’s about leading by example, showing compassion, and building relationships,” she shares, highlighting her belief that authentic leadership involves empowering others.
Hailing from Somosomo in the Yasawa Group, Ms. Naqolo’s path has not been devoid of obstacles. In a largely male-dominated industry, she often felt the need to prove her competence. “There’s a certain level of expectation placed on you, especially when you’re balancing emotional intelligence with operational tasks,” she explains. Nevertheless, she viewed these challenges as opportunities to grow, trusting her instincts and staying true to her authentic leadership style.
International Women’s Day not only allows Ms. Naqolo to celebrate her own achievements but also to honor the women who inspired her, particularly those from her village. “My mother, my grandmothers, and all the strong women who raised me—these women are my inspiration,” she expresses. Their support has been paramount in her pursuit of a career in hospitality.
A significant achievement in her career came in 2019 when she received the Star of the Year Award. This accolade validated her hard work and reinforced her belief in the importance of collective success, stating, “When one of us succeeds, we all succeed.”
Maintaining a balance between work and personal life is crucial in the demanding hospitality sector. Ms. Naqolo emphasizes the necessity of setting boundaries to foster a healthy work-life integration, advocating that “A rested, happy team is a productive team.” Her focus on self-care underscores its significance for achieving professional success.
Ms. Naqolo’s story serves as a source of inspiration across the hospitality industry, motivating individuals to perceive their challenges as opportunities for growth. Her journey reflects resilience, empowerment, and community spirit, offering hope to future generations of women leaders in hospitality.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we acknowledge not just individual triumphs but the collective accomplishments of women worldwide who are dedicated to uplifting one another and forging a brighter future for all.
