A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group, and a coastal inundation alert continues for southern coastal areas of the Coral Coast/Sigatoka, the Mamanuca Islands, Vatulele, Kadavu and southern Lau. A trough of low pressure with associated cloud, showers and rain will affect Fiji through tomorrow, while a low pressure system to the far south is producing moderate southwesterly swells around the islands.
Expect occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls across most areas today, with localised very heavy falls that may produce flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone locations. Coastal sea flooding is likely during high tides for the Coral Coast/Sigatoka, the Mamanuca group, Vatulele, Kadavu and the southern Lau group. Residents, particularly in low-lying coastal communities, should be prepared for temporary inundation around high tide periods.
Rain is forecast to gradually ease in many areas tomorrow, particularly over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. However afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms remain possible, with isolated heavy falls. Winds will be moderate easterly to northerly initially, tending easterly from tomorrow.
Seas are moderate overall with moderate southwesterly swells at present; the outlook for Friday is for moderate to rough seas as winds pick up. Friday will feature cloudy periods with some showers lingering across the same northern and eastern coastal provinces while most other areas will be fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Moderate to fresh easterly winds are expected and gusts are possible.
Local outlook highlights include: Navua/Suva/Nausori — occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with possible heavy falls, easing to some showers tomorrow (min 23°C, max 30°C; Friday min 23°C, max 31°C); the Yasawa/Mamanuca group and Sigatoka/Coral Coast — occasional rain with heavy falls and likely coastal flooding at high tide, easing towards partly cloudy conditions tomorrow (min 23°C, max 31°C); Nadi/Lautoka/Ba and surrounding areas — similar pattern with rain easing to showers (tomorrow min 23°C, max 31°C). Kadavu is also likely to see heavy falls and coastal sea flooding at high tide (tomorrow min 23°C, max 30°C). Rotuma has a slow‑moving trough producing occasional heavy showers and a few thunderstorms, easing from tomorrow with moderate northeasterly winds and moderate seas (tomorrow min 23°C, max 31°C; Friday min 24°C, max 32°C).
