Empowering Women in Agriculture: A New Era Begins in Fiji

Over 70 women gathered in Suva for the National Women in Agriculture Symposium, a pivotal event aimed at sharing experiences and tackling challenges faced by women in the agricultural sector. Among the attendees was Vijendra Wati, a prominent 60-year-old farmer from Nabekavu, Labasa, who has dedicated over thirty years to farming. Wati called for a greater emphasis on female leadership, underscoring the necessity of women’s voices in driving growth within the industry.

Wati’s journey in agriculture began at the young age of six, and she has since diversified into various farming activities, including vegetables, sugar cane, and poultry. She expressed a desire for future generations of women—including her daughters and daughters-in-law—to thrive and actively participate in agriculture. Pretika Raj, a 39-year-old dairy farmer from Naluwai, Naitasiri, supported this perspective, emphasizing the need for women’s contributions to be recognized and valued.

Andrew Tukana, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, reaffirmed the crucial role women occupy in the agricultural realm, reiterating the government’s dedication to fostering gender equality. He highlighted that the annual symposium, which coincides with International Women’s Day, plays an essential role in emphasizing women’s significant contributions to sustainable agriculture and food security.

This symposium is part of broader governmental strategies to enhance women’s involvement in agriculture, including recent floriculture training programs. These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to acknowledge the contributions of women in sectors traditionally dominated by men, signalling a cultural shift towards inclusivity.

As women in agriculture gain deserved recognition for their essential roles, there is a hopeful outlook for a more balanced and inclusive agricultural landscape. The focus on education and empowerment for women suggests a promising future, where their capabilities are leveraged to foster community development and economic stability in Fiji.
