Fiji Amateur Boxing is undergoing a remarkable transformation thanks to the leadership of national coach Cam Todd, who has been actively coaching for two years. Todd is prioritizing the cultivation of grassroots talent, convinced that Fiji holds the potential to excel in the Oceania boxing scene.
Since Todd’s arrival at the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association, notable achievements have emerged, including boxer Jone Davule’s historic gold medal win at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands—the first gold medal for Fiji in two decades. This victory is a testament to Todd’s effective coaching strategies and his dedication to fostering the next generation of boxers.
Currently, Todd is training a committed group of amateur boxers aged 14 to 17, alongside a senior elite team. Preparations are underway for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Guam later this year, demonstrating Todd’s proactive measures to elevate the sport.
Under Todd’s guidance, female participation in boxing has seen impressive growth, with the number of female boxers rising from just two to between 15 and 20. This increase reflects a significant shift towards inclusivity in the sport, which Todd actively encourages.
Looking ahead, the boxing community in Fiji is optimistic about future international competitions, with potential events lined up for 2025, such as the USA Boxing International Open and Australian Club Championships. Todd’s commitment to youth development and increased female involvement heralds a bright future for boxing in Fiji, indicating an upward trajectory on the global stage.
The dedication exhibited by Todd and his teams serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes in Fiji, underscoring that with continued support, a thriving boxing culture is on the verge of taking shape.
