Women and farmers from remote maritime islands often encounter significant obstacles in accessing government services, business support, and markets. However, a recent event at the Vanuabalavu Expo in Lomolomo, Lau, provided these women with an opportunity to turn challenges into pathways for growth and connection.
Over 50 women from Vanuabalavu, Cikobia, and Tuvuca participated, many traveling great distances to showcase their products, engage with business representatives, and seek advice on expanding their ventures. According to Tomi Finau, a member of the Vanuabalavu Day Committee, the expo effectively broke through longstanding barriers previously limiting access to necessary resources.
Temu Kotoiyacata, who manages her family’s farm, took advantage of the expo by meeting with Merchant Finance to explore startup options and purchasing farming tools directly at the event, significantly reducing what would typically be an expensive trip to the capital, Suva.
The expo was rich with local products, including handmade mats, crocheted items, island-scented coconut oils, and traditional food like vakasakera. Several stalls reported complete sell-outs by the event’s conclusion, reflecting the high interest and demand for locally produced goods. Moreover, businesses like Merchant Finance provided one-on-one sessions on managing small enterprises, while RC Manubhai delivered hardware supplies directly on-site.
Agricultural representatives contributed by offering advice and distributing seedlings, which benefits local farmers, particularly in livestock production, with pig farmers receiving piglets to boost their operations.
Finau noted that the event sparked newfound confidence in many women, some of whom had never sold beyond their home villages. Thanks to the connections and knowledge gained, many are now considering broader markets for their products. This expo underscored the significant impact that such community initiatives can have by providing not only necessary resources but also a strong sense of empowerment and collective spirit among participants.
