Earlier today, over 100 participants gathered at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva to join the global women’s strike, advocating for women’s human rights under the theme, “If Women Stop, the World Stops.” The event, organized by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, created an empowering atmosphere, allowing women from diverse backgrounds to unite for sharing ideas, advocacy, and relaxation.

Serelisoni Moceica, the Communication Manager for the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, explained that this gathering encouraged women to express their thoughts and challenges, highlighting the significance of stepping back from their daily responsibilities. She emphasized that the event sought to shine a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women’s unpaid labor and the importance of striving for gender equality.

The event was further enlivened by the participation of notable figures, including Laisa Vulakoro, a celebrated singer and the first female chairperson of the Fiji Performing Rights Association. Vulakoro’s involvement served not only as inspiration for attendees but also as a reminder of the continuous efforts needed to overcome barriers women face.

Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the gathering reflects a broader global movement advocating for equality and underscores the community’s solidarity in addressing women’s rights issues. The participation signifies a strong commitment to enacting meaningful change, which is vital for building a future where women’s roles are fully acknowledged and valued.

This event showcases the ongoing dedication of the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement to fight for human rights and gender equality, paving the way for improved policies and greater societal recognition of women’s essential contributions. Such initiatives provide hope for a more equitable future for everyone.
