The recent refresher workshop on human resources (HR) management attracted twenty-six micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Suva, marking a significant step toward enhancing operational effectiveness among local businesses. Organized by Business Assistance Fiji (BAF) and led by Watesoni Nata of Meditation Pacific, the workshop delivered crucial insights into HR policies, employment contracts, recruitment practices, compliance regulations, wage laws, FNPF (Fiji National Provident Fund) adherence, and the integration of AI in HR processes.
Participants, including local fashion designer Mami Loogie and Heritage Kava owner Hannah Saunitoga, spoke to the workshop’s significance. Loogie emphasized the importance of understanding HR procedures such as grievance handling and disciplinary actions for growth, while Saunitoga pointed out how effective HR practices are vital for businesses in rural regions like Levuka and essential for safeguarding the local workforce.
Nitika Singh, acting general manager at BAF, noted the workshop’s success in providing entrepreneurs with essential knowledge to navigate employment regulations effectively. She remarked on the collaborative spirit among attendees, which fostered discussions that can lead to a more compliant and productive work environment.
In addition to the HR training, BAF continues to empower MSMEs through partnership initiatives, such as their collaboration with Vodafone Fiji. This partnership enables businesses to utilize the VitiKart platform, an online marketplace that can enhance their product visibility and sales. Shimneet Chand, a product manager at VitiKart, explained that participants benefiting from the platform enjoy lower commission rates, further incentivizing engagement.
This concerted effort towards enhancing HR capabilities and market presence positions Fiji’s MSMEs for greater success. Not only does it equip local entrepreneurs with necessary skills, but it also contributes to the broader goals of economic growth and sustainability within the region. As these businesses strengthen their HR practices and market adaptability, they are set to thrive, positively impacting their communities and promoting overall prosperity.
