iTaukei landowners in Fiji face significant barriers when trying to become entrepreneurs, primarily stemming from financial difficulties and insufficient business education. Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, highlighted these challenges during a recent talanoa session in Kinoya, noting their detrimental impact on the engagement of iTaukei individuals in the business sector.
To address these issues, Vasu underscored the proactive role of the iTaukei Trust Fund Board (TTFB), which is dedicated to aiding iTaukei communities through financial literacy workshops designed to empower new entrepreneurs. He stated, “The TTFB has the capability to assist landowners and any iTaukei individuals looking to enter the business sector. We have the resources that can be utilized effectively, and it is crucial for us to provide business plans and other requirements that the TTFB can help with.”
Moreover, Vasu announced that the iTaukei Land Trust Board would allocate 10 percent of its earnings to a Wealth Fund aimed at supporting iTaukei businesses. He pointed out that many citizens are unaware of the assistance available from the TLTB, which is intended to facilitate their transition into entrepreneurship.
The Ministry aspires to raise the percentage of iTaukei business owners—currently sitting at a mere five percent—enabling these communities to contribute meaningfully to Fiji’s economy. This initiative is critical given the prior emphasis from TLTB CEO Solomoni Nata on the need for a mindset shift among landowners. Nata has encouraged them to abandon a dependency mentality and harness their own resources to uplift themselves from poverty.
In a related effort, recent workshops and community projects have been launched to enhance strategic planning skills and increase business ownership within the iTaukei community. The Minister’s ongoing commitment to promoting business initiatives reflects a hopeful trend toward greater economic resilience and diversity in Fiji.
In conclusion, increased community engagement and comprehensive support systems foster an environment conducive to entrepreneurship among iTaukei individuals, paving the way for a more empowered, financially independent, and prosperous future for these communities.
