Flash Flood Alerts Issued Across Fiji: Stay Safe and Informed!

A flash flood warning was issued this morning at 7:30 AM for all small streams and vulnerable low-lying areas in Vanua Levu. Additionally, the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) has extended a flash flood alert to the western, northern, and interior regions of Viti Levu.

The FMS has reported that an active trough of low pressure, accompanied by clouds and rainfall, along with enhanced northwest winds, is affecting the Fiji Group. This weather system is expected to gradually spread eastward across the islands until Tuesday.

Residents living in areas prone to flash flooding and adjacent to waterways are urged to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Seru could lead to significant flooding. The FMS notes that flooding events may arise from clogged drainage systems and overflowing streams, particularly affecting low water bridges, Irish crossings, and properties situated in low-lying regions.

The next special weather bulletin regarding flash floods will be issued at 10:30 AM today or sooner if conditions change.

Authorities remind the public to stay safe by avoiding flooded areas and to heed any advisories from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other agencies. Flooding is anticipated in these vulnerable regions, yet by staying informed and cautious, residents can mitigate risks and ensure their safety during this weather event.

In summary, while the potential for disruption exists due to these weather conditions, with awareness and adherence to safety guidelines, communities can navigate the challenges posed by the floods and emerge resilient.
