Westpac Fiji has launched its 15th annual Women and Girls Education Grant, highlighting the bank’s ongoing dedication to advancing gender equality in education. This initiative provides essential financial support to female students at different educational stages, with grants amounting to $500 for primary school students, $1,000 for secondary school students, and $2,500 for those in tertiary or adult education. Since the program began, it has aided over 30 recipients, showcasing Westpac’s long-term commitment to fostering women’s education.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Westpac branches organized community walks and various activities to promote gender equality and inclusivity. Shane Smith, CEO of Westpac Fiji, emphasized that investing in women’s education is not just a matter of social justice; it also acts as a driving force for social and economic development.

Reflecting its commitment to diversity, women represent 60 percent of Westpac Fiji’s workforce, with women holding 40 percent of leadership roles. The bank is also a signatory to the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (WE-Fi) Code and has educated over 39,000 women in financial literacy throughout the last decade.

This year’s grant encourages creative participation; primary school students are invited to create posters demonstrating supportive environments for girls, while secondary students will write essays on empowering women in Fiji. Tertiary and adult learners are asked to share personal stories highlighting the importance of investing in women and girls. Applications for the grant will be accepted until July 31, with additional information available on the Westpac website.

The Women and Girls Education Grant underscores the crucial role educational initiatives play in promoting gender equality and empowering women in Fiji. Continued support for female education is vital for establishing a more just and prosperous future for everyone in the community.
