The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has introduced the Pilot Tourism Micro and Small Enterprise Fund, a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower micro and small enterprises (MSMEs) within the tourism sector. This fund is bolstered by a substantial allocation of $400,000 from the national budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025.
The program aims to provide direct support to small businesses, including family-operated guesthouses, local tour operators, and providers of cultural activities, which are essential components of Fiji’s tourism landscape. The ministry emphasized that by addressing financial access challenges, the fund will enable businesses to improve their offerings and cater to the increasing demand for immersive cultural and community-based tourism experiences.
This initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive approach to maintaining a resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive tourism sector. The Fund also aligns with significant national efforts such as the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program and the Farm to Fork Initiative, aimed at establishing a strong support network for entrepreneurs and local communities.
To qualify for the grants, applicants must be Fijian citizens aged 18 and above, operate a majority locally-owned registered business, have been in operation for at least two years, and show that a significant part of their revenue is derived from tourism activities. Additionally, they must contribute one-third of the project costs.
The oversight of the program will be managed by a panel combining government agencies and partners, including the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Fiji Development Bank, and Business Assistance Fiji. Applications for the grant program opened on December 4 and will remain open until February 28 of the following year.
This initiative represents a promising step forward in fostering entrepreneurship in Fiji’s tourism industry, potentially leading to enhanced tourism offerings and improved economic resilience for local communities.
