The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is making strides to engage Fijians living in Australia and New Zealand for the upcoming 2026 General Election. This initiative is bolstered by a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the FEO and the Ministry of Employment, aimed at enhancing voter registration and civic participation among Fijians abroad.

Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa emphasized that the MoU represents a crucial commitment to ensuring every eligible Fijian, regardless of their location, has the opportunity to register and vote. She highlighted the importance of inclusivity in the electoral process, stating that this partnership will help facilitate a fairer and more representative democracy.

The MoU establishes a collaborative framework that specifically targets Fijian workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme and the Recognized Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme. This framework aims to ensure these workers are well-informed about their voting rights and responsibilities, thus promoting their engagement in Fiji’s democratic processes.

The initiative follows ongoing efforts to improve the working conditions and rights of Fijian workers abroad, as mentioned in previous discussions around the PALM scheme. Among those previous updates, attention was drawn to the importance of fair treatment and compliance with labor rights for overseas workers, which aligns with the overall goal of fostering civic responsibility among Fijians living outside their homeland.

As Fijians around the world prepare for the 2026 elections, this partnership between the FEO and the Ministry of Employment offers a hopeful outlook, ensuring that the voices of all Fijians, including those working internationally, will be heard and represented in their country’s governance. This proactive approach not only strengthens the democratic process but also reinforces the connection between Fijians abroad and their home nation.
