The controversy surrounding Barbara Malimali has intensified with the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, filing a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The report, submitted to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew on November 28, 2024, includes serious allegations of abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.

This complaint is part of a broader investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) related to Ms. Malimali, who is currently facing scrutiny during a Commission of Inquiry. The CID is also examining claims of misconduct during her previous role as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Mr. Chew has confirmed receipt of Ms. Mataiciwa’s report and has stated that investigations will be conducted. In her response to media inquiries, Ms. Mataiciwa explained that her decision to file the report was prompted by notifications from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding complaints made by Ms. Malimali, which suggested that Ms. Mataiciwa assisted in Malimali’s arrest.

Furthermore, the Chief Registrar’s Office has sought responses from Ms. Mataiciwa and other legal professionals concerning a misconduct complaint raised by Ms. Malimali. Ms. Mataiciwa contended that, considering Ms. Malimali’s position as a crucial witness in an ongoing CID investigation, the allegations against her constituted intimidation and harassment.

In a parallel development, former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, has submitted a complaint against Ms. Malimali as well. He accuses her of misusing her power as commissioner in issuing a stop departure order earlier in the year. This case, too, has been referred to the CID for further investigation.

Despite attempts to reach Ms. Malimali for her comments, no response was available at the time of reporting.

This ongoing situation highlights the complex dynamics of accountability within Fiji’s electoral processes. It underscores the importance of impartial investigations to ensure transparency and integrity in governance. Moving forward, these developments could pave the way for positive reforms in the sector as all parties involved are held accountable for their actions.

In summary, the unfolding Barbara Malimali saga involves serious allegations from multiple parties, prompting investigations that may lead to a more robust electoral framework in Fiji.
