Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is still waiting for a detailed report concerning a significant issue that arose during the 2022 General Election in Fiji. During the opening of the Higher Education Commission’s office in Labasa, he mentioned that he has not yet received the comprehensive findings regarding the malfunction of the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app, which occurred on December 14, 2022.

The glitch disrupted the vote counting process, ultimately leading to the suspension of the provisional results. This malfunction was attributed to discrepancies between the data reported through the app and the physical vote count, which sparked considerable public concern and demands for transparency in the electoral process.

Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa expressed the urgency for a thorough investigation into the incident, noting that despite preparations for the upcoming 2026 elections, clear directives from Justice Minister Siromi Turaga have yet to be provided. Rabuka, who has voiced his concerns regarding the legitimacy of the election results in light of the glitch, echoed Mataiciwa’s sentiments, stating, “We still haven’t received any answers.”

Emails sent to Minister Turaga regarding the situation have not been answered. This ongoing issue underscores the complexities involved in ensuring electoral integrity and highlights the need for reform within the electoral system in Fiji. The situation calls for improved communication and accountability from the government as it navigates its commitment to fostering public trust ahead of future elections.

Despite the current frustrations surrounding this unresolved matter, there remains a hopeful outlook. Continued dialogue among government officials and electoral stakeholders may lead to significant improvements in the electoral framework, thereby enhancing transparency and integrity in future electoral processes. The commitment to improving these systems is vital for restoring public confidence in Fiji’s democracy.
