The Nasinu Town Council has announced plans to advocate for the waiver of council rates for elderly residents experiencing financial difficulties. This proposal was highlighted during the recent World Elder Abuse Awareness Day celebration in Nasinu, where council chairman Felix Magnus emphasized the importance of supporting the elderly, who have significantly contributed to the community over the years.

Magnus stated that he would engage with the Local Government Ministry to facilitate the waiving of these debts, reassuring elderly ratepayers that their hardships will be taken into consideration. “I will sit with the honourable minister and see that these debts… town council rates are waived for the elderly because of the hardships they face,” he remarked. The council estimates that between 2,000 and 3,000 elderly ratepayers will benefit from this initiative, which showcases a strong commitment to addressing the financial struggles of seniors in the community.

The council’s efforts align with the objectives of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, aimed at shedding light on the various forms of abuse and neglect that elderly individuals often endure. Speaking about previous concerns, representatives have highlighted the alarming rise in elder abuse, with officials like Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa pointing to distressing statistics that indicate one in six seniors suffers from mistreatment. Such societal challenges reveal a critical need for protective measures and community support networks for the elderly.

In recent initiatives, discussions around enhancing community support systems for the elderly have been emphasized, demonstrating a collective commitment from both government and community leaders to advocate for the rights and needs of older citizens. With further plans to establish gathering spaces and enhance social interactions among seniors, there is a hopeful perspective that these combined efforts can lead to significant improvements in the quality of life for the elderly population in Fiji.

By fostering awareness and encouraging community involvement, we can pave the way for a more compassionate society where senior citizens are respected, supported, and allowed to live with dignity.
