Driver bailed after alleged hit-and-run resulting in child’s death along Lekutu-Nabouwalu Highway

The driver accused of causing the death of a five-year-old boy along the Lekutu-Nabouwalu Highway in Bua was granted bail under strict conditions at the Labasa Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Ashneel Sahil Deo appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage. Deo is accused of failing to stop after the alleged accident and is charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and failure to comply with requirements following an accident.

The incident occurred on June 15, 2024, when the minor, standing with his father, allegedly ran across the road. The boy succumbed to his injuries a day later at Labasa Hospital. The driver evaded police for five days before being arrested on June 19.

During initial investigations, it is alleged that Deo chose to remain silent during the police caution interview. Police prosecutor Sergeant Vignesh Prasad did not object to bail but requested two sureties from the defense.

Defense lawyer John Prasad initially argued for one surety but later agreed to two. A cash bail bond of $1000 was also imposed by the court.

Magistrate Jagodage set bail for Deo with the conditions that he should not reoffend, must reside in Naduna, Labasa with his father, and should not change his address. Deo is required to appear at all court mentions until the case is resolved and must not interfere with State witnesses. Additionally, he is prohibited from applying for any travel documents while the case is active.

The case has been adjourned to August 29, 2024, at the Nabouwalu Magistrate’s Court for plea. Deo’s lawyer, Mr. Prasad, sought permission to transfer the case to the Labasa Magistrates Court, but Magistrate Jagodage advised him to file an application for the transfer.
