Next year’s Fiji Finals may introduce semifinals for the first time in the event’s history, following a motion passed by the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA) at its Annual General Meeting held in Suva. Secretary Biu Colati shared that semifinals will occur for events that feature seven heats or more, with the decision reflecting a significant step towards enhancing the competitive environment.
An example of this change is evident in the boys’ sub-junior 100 meters event, which boasts nine heats this year. However, only the top eight athletes will progress to the finals. Colati conveyed a sentiment of excitement and apprehension during discussions with managers about this new format, signaling a fresh approach to the athletics landscape in Fiji.
This year’s Fiji Finals promises to be vibrant, with around 2,800 athletes from 160 schools participating, a rise from previous years as five more schools have joined the competition. Athletes will compete for a total of 32 gold medals—17 for girls and 15 for boys—across various events, including the much-anticipated 100 meters and 1500 meters finals.
Colati has also highlighted the impressive performance of athletes from maritime schools, stating that all athletes from these regions met qualifying standards. The inclusion of these athletes will bring diversity and a competitive edge to the event. Furthermore, over 50 additional athletes, who previously did not qualify, have managed to earn spots through the divisional games held recently.
The introduction of semifinals reflects a broader commitment to improving the sporting experience for young athletes, fostering an environment that encourages competition and talent development. This innovative change may pave the way for an engaging future in athletics, inspiring young athletes and energizing fans across the country.
Excitement for the Fiji Finals is already building, with live coverage available on FBC TV starting early in the morning, ensuring that fans can follow the thrilling action from wherever they are. The event encapsulates the spirit of youth athleticism in Fiji, uniting communities and celebrating the dedication of young sports talents.
