Fijian tourism transport operator, TEWAKA, has recently made a significant investment of $600,000 in four brand new electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative is part of the company’s commitment to align with the global trend towards environmentally sustainable travel.
Managing Director James Sowane stated that the integration of these electric vehicles into their fleet demonstrates TEWAKA’s strategic goal to reduce its carbon footprint. The company acquired four 7-seat Maxus MIFA 9 Elite electric vehicles, which not only include the vehicles themselves but also the necessary infrastructure for charging stations.
Sowane highlighted that the Maxus MIFA 9s have an impressive range of 435 kilometers when fully charged and boast high standards of interior finishing, seat comfort, and safety features. As the official transport provider for several major hotels and resorts, TEWAKA recognizes the increasing awareness among guests regarding their environmental impact, leading to a growing preference for EVs due to their lower emissions and eco-friendly benefits.
The move towards electric vehicles mirrors broader trends noted in similar efforts by other organizations in Fiji. For instance, Fiji Airports has also recently enhanced its sustainability efforts by becoming the owner of the largest electric vehicle fleet in the region, incorporating various sustainability initiatives including plans for a solar farm and other eco-friendly practices. This collective shift towards electric mobility is indicative of a larger commitment within Fiji’s tourism and transport sectors to embrace sustainable and innovative solutions for a greener future.
Overall, TEWAKA’s investment in electric vehicles not only reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship but also positions the company favorably among environmentally conscious travelers. This investment is a step forward for sustainable tourism in Fiji, illustrating the potential for growth in eco-friendly initiatives that benefit both the environment and the economy.
