May 3, 2026: Fiji under Strong Wind Warning with Gusts to 55 km/h and Heavy Rain Alert Across Viti Levu, Lau and Kadavu as Trough Lingers

Tropical coastal scene with palm trees, rocky shoreline, and stormy weather in Fiji.

A slow-moving trough of low pressure sitting over Fiji will continue to produce persistent east to southeast winds, showers and periods of heavy rain through tomorrow and into Tuesday. A strong wind warning remains in force for several island groups and coastal districts, and a heavy rain alert is now in force for interior, southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu and a number of northern and eastern provinces.

The strong wind warning covers Southern Lau, Yasayasa Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, the Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, the southern and eastern half of Viti Levu (from the Sigatoka coral coast through Suva up to Rakiraki), southern Bua and Cakaudrove including Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. In these areas expect east to southeast winds 35–45 km/h with gusts up to 55 km/h at times. Seas will be rough to very rough around these islands and coasts; elsewhere winds will be moderate to fresh with moderate to rough seas.

A heavy rain alert is in force for the interior, southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu (Rakairaki–Korovou–Naitasiri, Nausori–Suva–Navua, Pacific Harbour to Sigatoka), Cakaudrove and southern Bua provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lomaiviti group, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. These areas can expect occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so residents in vulnerable locations should remain alert.

Across the rest of the group there will be cloudy periods with isolated afternoon or evening showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Marine users, small boat operators and anyone planning coastal activities should take account of the rough sea conditions and stronger winds, while people should secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution when travelling in flood-prone areas.

City and island notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect east to southeast winds 35–45 km/h (gusting to 55 km/h) with occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms; temperatures around 23/29°C. Rakiraki, Tavua and the Coral Coast also have the same wind regime and a risk of heavy falls. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are likely to see cloudy periods with isolated showers and thunderstorms, highs near 31°C. Taveuni, Savusavu and Nabouwalu should expect occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Rotuma will have occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with moderate southeasterly winds and moderate to rough seas. The outlook for Tuesday remains unsettled, with further occasional rain, isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls in the same areas.
